From Web-Bots to Better Navigation
One of the best ways to update an older site is to get rid of any navigation that relies on older "web-bot" navigation. It's easy to switch to using Included Content instead.

Older FrontPage navigation relied on pages in the Navigation view as shown above.

If you right-click on a group of links and see "Link Bar Properties" in the menu, those links use "web-bot" navigation.

We start by creating a new, blank page. This new page will be used for our new links.

Save this new page by going to File > Save As. In the dialog box, give your new page a name and a title.

Type the text for your link names, separating each link with a vertical bar or a bullet. Hyperlink each name to the correct page in your site.

Now open a page and click once on the navigation bar. This will highlight the entire group of links.

Next, go to Insert > Web Component. Select Included Content > Page. Browse to your new page that contains your links. [Note: Include components are not available in Expression Web. However, you can still create include pages by copying the code from FrontPage2003 or making your own Code Snippet.]

Your new included content will overwrite the web-bot navigation links. You may, however, notice that the text has an extra space below the links.

Switch to code or split view and locate the new include content code. Remove the (non-breaking space) code.

The extra space has been removed. Now copy this include content and replace the web-bot navigation on your other pages.
