Search Engines
There is no single "magic" formula to being
listed in the major search engines. Beware of anyone who promises to get you on the first page
of any search engine. It just isn't possible to make such claims without
using tactics that may get your site banned or worse.
Before you submit your new site to any search engines, do the following:
- Remember that content is king. The text that you have on your pages
is what most search engines will use. If you are selling "widgets",
don't include a lot of text about "doo-dads". Save the "who we are" and
"what we do" for the about us page.
- Each page of your site is unique. You can optimize your content, the
page title, and meta tags for each page. So instead of just your home
page being important, you can give importance to every page in your
site.
- Have a good, clear, descriptive title on every page. You especially
want to change the title on your home page. The last thing you want is
for Google to index the page with our title "Template 3320". It could
take months for Google to update the change when you finally get around
to changing the title tag.
- Make good use of Headings (h1, h2, etc.). These items are given more
importance. Do not just make text large and in a different color. The
search engine will think it is the same as regular text unless it uses
the heading tags.
- Use alternate text on all images. Search engines cannot read a
photo, but they can and do read the alt text for that image.
- View your site statistics to find out what words are entered into
the search engines to find your site. Adjust your site's content text as
necessary.
- You do not have to submit your site more than once! Do not resubmit
every month or you will just annoy the search engines. Once you are
indexed, the best way to keep those little search engine spiders coming
back is to add new text often.
